Date

September 2024

Location

The Create Dangerously Forum organized by Open Scene and the Haitian American Art Network focused on the journey of Black Latin immigrant artists, exploring themes of identity, resilience, and the complexities of creating art while navigating the challenges of immigration and cultural displacement. Held on September 4, 2024, at the Art & History Museum of Maitland, the event featured a keynote address by acclaimed author Edwidge Danticat, who delved into her experiences as a Haitian immigrant and the broader struggles faced by immigrant artists.

The forum provided a platform for artists to discuss how their unique cultural backgrounds influence their work and the ways in which they confront issues of representation, belonging, and systemic injustice. Moderated by UCF professor Marie Leticee, the event included contributions from panelist Patrick Noze, who highlighted a special gift to the city, further enhancing the cultural exchange. Through this discussion, the forum encouraged artists to continue creating boldly, despite the risks and obstacles, and to celebrate the power of their voices in shaping cultural narratives.

The **Create Dangerously Forum** also highlighted the creation of a mural dedicated to recognizing the contributions of the Haitian community to the local area. This mural will serve as a tribute to the rich cultural heritage and influence of Haitian immigrants, honoring their role in shaping the community. The initiative aimed to celebrate the unique contributions of the Haitian diaspora through art, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of their impact. Panelist Patrick Noze announced this special project during the forum, and it will be done in 2025 as a special commission from Open Scene.
