In What Language Are You Most Yourself?

Late Conversations is a recurring series of open discussions held at the Germaine Marvel Building at the Art & History Museums of Maitland. Each evening brings together a small group around one question, with wine, water or coffee, without agendas, and without easy answers. Conversations are held primarily in English. Language assistance in 25+ languages available upon request.

Language is more than communication. It shapes memory, humor, intimacy, power, and perception.

This Late Conversations evening explores what it means to live between languages — the things that survive translation and the things that don’t. We talk about bilingualism, code-switching, accent, and the quiet identity shifts that happen when we change languages.

Who are we when we switch? What becomes impossible to translate? Is language a tool, or a home?
