October 2023

Thanks to a grant from the Florida Department of State, Open Scene presented the dramatic readings of the Special Mentions from the first two editions of its Escena Abierta playwriting contest, and the winning play of the third. This initiative amplified powerful Latin voices and was directed by Rafael Barazarte from Caracas’ Trasnocho Cultural Complex.

Featured Plays:
Something's Rotten in This Building by Mar Gámez, performed by 10 students from Universidad Sagrado Corazón – Special Mention 2021
La Madre Que No Me Parió (The Mother Who Didn’t Birth Me) by Antonio García del Toro, performed at the A&H Museums of Maitland – Special Mention 2022
Aquel Mi Terrenito (That Little Plot of Mine) by Marco Mancilla, performed at the CVA in Caracas – Winner 2023

These events reflect Open Scene’s commitment to cross-border storytelling, highlighting the diversity and depth of contemporary Latin American playwriting.
