Puerperio: Motherhood Play at VOICES 2023 | Open Scene

Project type

Voces | Social Theater | Theater in Spanish | Community Talkback

Date

March 2023

Location

Fringe Art Space

Presented as part of VOICES 2023, Puerperio was a compelling theatrical work by Open Scene that explored the often romanticized view of motherhood. Through the voices of multiple female artists, the play focused on the postpartum period—also known as the puerperium—highlighting themes of loneliness, female lineage, violence, and the emotional transformations that follow childbirth. The performance moved beyond idealized narratives, offering a more honest, layered portrayal of motherhood. Following the play, UCF scholar Dr. Charlotte Trinquet du Lys led a discussion that unpacked these themes through the lens of literary and cultural analysis, enriching the audience’s experience.
